Reagents in Organic synthesis

Anhydrous Aluminium Chloride –

This catalyst can be prepared by two methods

1) Reductive chlorination of bauxite ore

2) Direct chlorination

Let's see one by one,

1) Reductive chlorination of bauxite ore – Bauxite ore is mixed with coke asphalt and heated. This process removes water. Then the resulting mixture is further heated to high temperature in kiln and followed by the passing of chlorine gas over it. During this the Aluminium trichloride is formed which is further sublimated, then cooled down and the crystals are collected in well-stoppered bottles.
